17α-[4,4-difluoro-8-(4-ethynylphenyl)-1,3,5,7-tetramethyl-4-bora-3a,4a-diaza-s-indacene]-7α-me-19-nortestosterone is a steroid-fluorophore conjugate developed as a theranostic agent for cancer. It combines a 7α-methyl-19-nortestosterone scaffold, which has a high affinity for the androgen receptor (AR), with a fluorescent BODIPY (boron-dipyrromethene) dye. This conjugate is designed to selectively target and internalize into AR-expressing cancer cells, such as those found in prostate and breast cancers, via energy-dependent clathrin- and caveolae-mediated endocytosis. In addition to its use in fluorescence imaging for cancer detection, the molecule acts as a photosensitizer for photodynamic therapy (PDT); upon exposure to visible light, it induces reactive oxygen species-mediated cell death, offering a dual-purpose approach for the diagnosis and treatment of AR-positive malignancies.
