Overview

17α-picolyl-androst-5-en-3β,4α,17β-triol is a synthetic heterocyclic steroid derivative belonging to the androstane family. It was developed by researchers at the University of Novi Sad as a potential therapeutic agent for triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC). The molecule features a picolyl (2-pyridylmethyl) group at the 17α position and a trihydroxyl substitution pattern (3β, 4α, 17β) on the androstene skeleton. In preclinical in vitro studies, the compound has demonstrated significant antiproliferative activity against MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cells. Its mechanism of action involves the induction of programmed cell death (apoptosis) and the modulation of the cell cycle, potentially bypassing the resistance mechanisms common in receptor-negative breast cancer subtypes.
