17-picolinylidene-androsta-3,5-diene is a synthetic heterocyclic steroidal compound developed as a potential antineoplastic agent. It is an androstane derivative characterized by a picolinylidene moiety at the C-17 position and a diene system in the A and B rings (3,5-diene). Structurally related to the prostate cancer drug abiraterone, this compound has been investigated primarily in preclinical research for its potent antiproliferative and pro-apoptotic activities. Studies have demonstrated its efficacy against various cancer cell lines, including triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) cells such as MDA-MB-231 and prostate cancer cells like PC3. Its mechanism of action involves the induction of apoptosis through both intrinsic and extrinsic pathways and the modulation of the cell cycle. Additionally, due to its structural similarity to abiraterone, it is considered a potential inhibitor of the enzyme CYP17A1, which is essential for androgen biosynthesis.
