Overview

17alpha-picolyl-androst-4-en-3beta,17beta-diol is a synthetic heterocyclic steroidal small molecule belonging to the androstane family. It is characterized by the presence of a picolyl (2-pyridylmethyl) substituent at the 17α-position of the steroid nucleus. Developed primarily as an antineoplastic agent, this compound has demonstrated significant in vitro antiproliferative activity against breast cancer cell lines, with a particular focus on triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) models such as MDA-MB-231. Its mechanism of action involves the induction of apoptotic cell death and the modulation of cell cycle distribution, offering a potential therapeutic pathway for aggressive cancers that lack estrogen, progesterone, and HER2 receptors and are thus resistant to conventional targeted hormonal therapies.
