2'-fucosyllactose

2'-Fucosyllactose (2'-FL) is a fucosylated neutral trisaccharide composed of L-fucose, D-galactose, and D-glucose units. It is the most prevalent human milk oligosaccharide (HMO), naturally present in human breast milk and making up about 30% of all HMOs[4]. It is produced commercially via microbial fermentation using E. coli or by chemical/enzymatic synthesis[4][8][6]. As a prebiotic compound, it promotes the growth of beneficial bifidobacteria in the gut and helps protect against infectious diseases by preventing pathogen adhesion to epithelial cells[4]. In addition to its prebiotic effects, studies suggest anti-inflammatory properties and potential immune-enhancing effects through modulation of cytokine production such as IL-10 and IFN-gamma[1][5]. Clinical trials are investigating its use as a dietary supplement for conditions like inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)[3].
