Overview

This drug is a synbiotic combination consisting of the human milk oligosaccharide (HMO) **2'-fucosyllactose (2'-FL)** as the prebiotic component and the probiotic strain **Bifidobacterium longum subsp. infantis EFEL8008**. Designed as a live biotherapeutic product (LBP) for oral administration, it targets the modulation of the adult gut microbiota to address gut dysbiosis. The 2'-FL component is highly resistant to upper gastrointestinal digestion, allowing it to reach the colon where it selectively serves as a substrate for the EFEL8008 strain. In vitro studies have demonstrated that this synbiotic significantly increases the abundance of *Bifidobacterium*, improves microbial diversity, and enriches beneficial commensal taxa such as *Lactobacillus* while reducing potential pathogens. Furthermore, the treatment markedly enhances the production of beneficial short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs)—including acetate, propionate, lactate, and butyrate—and suppresses the formation of trimethylamine (TMA), a metabolite associated with cardiovascular risk.
