Overview

2(S)-amino-6-boronohexanoic acid, commonly referred to as ABH, is a synthetic, non-proteinogenic L-alpha-amino acid and an organoboron compound structurally related to L-norleucine. It acts as a highly potent and specific inhibitor of arginase enzymes (arginase I and II). By inhibiting arginase activity, ABH increases the availability of L-arginine for nitric oxide synthase, thereby enhancing nitric oxide production. This mechanism has been shown in preclinical studies to improve endothelial function and erectile hemodynamics in aged rats by reducing elevated arginase activity associated with aging or disease states such as erectile dysfunction. ABH is primarily used experimentally as a biochemical tool for studying the physiological roles of arginases[3][4][7].
