2,2'-Dibenzothiazyl disulfide (also known as MBTS) is a chemical compound primarily utilized as an accelerator in the sulfur vulcanization of rubber. In clinical medicine, it is recognized as a significant contact allergen and is included in standardized diagnostic patch test panels, such as the T.R.U.E. Test, to identify allergic contact dermatitis in individuals sensitized to rubber chemicals. Research indicates that it is also a metabolite of various 2-benzothiazyl sulfenamides, such as N-cyclohexyl-2-benzothiazyl sulfenamide, which are also used in rubber manufacturing. While it has no therapeutic applications, its role as a diagnostic tool for identifying Type IV hypersensitivity reactions makes it a regulated pharmaceutical substance in the context of allergy testing.
