2,3,5-triiodo-alpha-tocopheryl is a novel, non-toxic, iodinated contrast agent developed for preclinical X-ray and micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) imaging. Chemically, it is a tri-iodinated derivative of alpha-tocopherol (Vitamin E). When formulated as PEGylated nano-emulsions, it exhibits high liver and hepatocyte specificity, prolonged blood circulation (half-life of approximately 9 hours), and significant liver persistence (half-life > 50 days). It is primarily used in preclinical research for the high-precision detection, quantitative measurement, and longitudinal follow-up of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in mouse models, offering sensitivity comparable to MRI standards.
