Overview

DOI (2,5-dimethoxy-4-iodoamphetamine) is a substituted amphetamine and a potent psychedelic research chemical. It acts primarily as a selective agonist at the 5-HT2A, 5-HT2B, and 5-HT2C serotonin receptors. Discovered by Alexander Shulgin, DOI is widely used in neuroscience research to study the function of the serotonin system and the mechanisms of hallucinogenic drugs. It is often used in its radiolabeled form ([125I]-DOI) as a ligand for mapping 5-HT2 receptor distribution in the brain. While it has been studied for potential anti-inflammatory effects and as a treatment for glaucoma in animal models, it is not approved for clinical use in humans and is classified as a Schedule I controlled substance in many jurisdictions.
