Drug intelligence / Profile preview
This experimental synbiotic combination consists of the human milk oligosaccharide (HMO) prebiotic **2'-fucosyllactose (2'-FL)** and the probiotic strain ***Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis* BB-12**. It is being investigated as a **live biotherapeutic product (LBP)** for the treatment of **autism spectrum disorder (ASD)**. Administered orally, the combination aims to modulate the gut-brain axis by optimizing gut microbiota structure, specifically increasing the abundance of beneficial bacteria such as *Bifidobacteria* and *Akkermansia*. Preclinical studies in valproic acid-induced mouse models have demonstrated that this synbiotic alleviates social deficits and repetitive behaviors, reduces neuroinflammation and neuronal damage, and improves gut barrier integrity. These therapeutic effects are associated with significantly elevated fecal levels of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), which play a crucial role in gut-brain communication.
