**2'-methyl-MPTP** is a selective dopaminergic neurotoxin structurally related to MPTP and used in scientific research to lesion dopaminergic neurons. It is considerably more potent than MPTP in mice, but less potent in primates. Like MPTP, it produces Parkinson's disease-like syndromes in animal models, enabling studies of parkinsonism. 2'-methyl-MPTP acts by being metabolized by monoamine oxidases (MAO-A and MAO-B) within the brain to toxic metabolites that selectively damage dopaminergic neurons, particularly in the substantia nigra. Its neurotoxicity can be blocked by inhibiting both MAO-A and MAO-B. It is not marketed for human medical use and is utilized primarily in neurotoxicological and Parkinson’s disease model research[6][1].
