Overview

2-(1',2'-dihydroxyethyl)-3-methylquinoxaline is a small molecule research compound developed by OMM Scientific. It is a stable chemical adduct formed by the reaction of the quorum-sensing signaling molecule Autoinducer-2 (AI-2), specifically its precursor 4,5-dihydroxy-2,3-pentanedione (DPD), with a quinoxaline-forming reagent. AI-2 is a universal signal used by both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria to coordinate gene expression and biofilm formation. This compound is primarily used as a tool in preclinical research to detect, quantify, and study the AI-2 quorum sensing pathway, which is a target for developing novel antimicrobial strategies that disrupt bacterial communication rather than killing the bacteria directly.
