Overview

A synthetic small molecule belonging to the thienopyran class of organic compounds. It is a nonphosphorus and nonpeptide inhibitor designed for high selectivity against protein tyrosine phosphatase 1B (PTP1B), an enzyme implicated in negative regulation of insulin signaling. The compound was developed through structure-based design to exploit unique features of PTP1B for selectivity and has been studied as a potential lead for antidiabetic drug development due to its ability to enhance insulin sensitivity by inhibiting PTP1B activity. Its molecular formula is C10H9NO6S and it has been characterized in structural biology studies as a highly selective low-molecular-weight inhibitor with no current clinical approval or marketed indications.[3][4][9]
