Drug intelligence / Profile preview
2-[18F]fluoroethyl-L-phenylalanine (also known as 2-[18F]FELP) is a novel radiofluorinated L-type amino acid transporter 1 (LAT1)-specific positron emission tomography (PET) imaging tracer developed by Ghent University and Ghent University Hospital. It is designed for brain tumor imaging, specifically to differentiate glioblastoma from radiation necrosis and neuroinflammation, which is a major clinical challenge with conventional tracers like [18F]FDG. 2-[18F]FELP is transported into cells via LAT1, which is highly overexpressed in glioblastoma cells but has low expression in normal brain tissue and inflammatory cells. It is currently in Phase I clinical development for glioblastoma imaging.
