The 2019-nCoV inactivated vaccine refers to a category of vaccines designed to provide immunity against SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for COVID-19, using inactivated (killed) virus particles. The production process involves growing the virus in cell culture (typically Vero cells), followed by chemical inactivation, usually with beta-propiolactone, which preserves the structural integrity of the viral antigens while eliminating infectivity. These vaccines present the entire virion to the immune system, including the spike (S), envelope (E), membrane (M), and nucleocapsid (N) proteins, thereby eliciting a broad humoral and cellular immune response. Common examples include Sinovac's CoronaVac and Sinopharm's BBIBP-CorV. They are generally formulated with aluminum hydroxide as an adjuvant and administered via intramuscular injection. This platform was among the first to be deployed globally during the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly in China, India, and several developing nations.
