Drug intelligence / Profile preview
20% autologous serum eye drops + artificial tears is a combination therapy being investigated by the Université de Sherbrooke for the treatment of corneal epitheliopathy, specifically in patients with glaucoma using preserved antihypertensive drops. Autologous serum eye drops (ASED) are produced from the patient's own peripheral blood and contain a variety of epitheliotrophic factors, including epidermal growth factor (EGF), transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β), fibroblast growth factor (FGF), vitamin A, and fibronectin. These components mimic the biochemical properties of natural tears and promote corneal epithelial cell proliferation, migration, and differentiation. The addition of standard artificial tears (such as Refresh Plus) provides further lubrication and volume to the ocular surface, addressing the dry eye symptoms and epithelial damage caused by chronic exposure to preservatives like benzalkonium chloride.
