Overview

**3'-Deoxyguanosine** is a synthetic purine nucleoside analog in which the ribose sugar of guanosine lacks a hydroxyl group at the 3' position. It is classified as a member of the guanosines and purine nucleosides. This compound acts primarily as an inhibitor of RNA-directed RNA polymerase (EC 2.7.7.48), interfering with transcription processes[3][5][6]. It can also bind to and inhibit purine nucleoside phosphorylase[2][4], an enzyme involved in nucleotide metabolism. As such, it has been studied for its potential antitumor activity—mainly through inhibition of DNA synthesis and induction of apoptosis—and for possible antiviral or anti-infective effects due to its ability to impair viral replication[1][6]. Its use remains experimental; it is not approved for clinical use.
