Overview

The **3+7 regimen** (also known as the "7+3" regimen) is a standard combination chemotherapy protocol used primarily as first-line induction therapy for acute myeloid leukemia (AML), excluding acute promyelocytic leukemia. The name refers to the schedule of administration: patients receive continuous intravenous infusion of cytarabine for seven days and an anthracycline antibiotic (most commonly daunorubicin or sometimes idarubicin) for three days. The mechanism of action involves inhibition of DNA synthesis and function by both agents—cytarabine is a nucleoside analog that inhibits DNA polymerase, while anthracyclines intercalate into DNA and inhibit topoisomerase II. This combination aims to induce remission by eradicating leukemic blasts from the bone marrow[1][2][6].
