Overview

3,4-Epoxybutyl-alpha-D-glucopyranoside is a synthetic glycoside in which a glucose moiety is linked via an O-glycosidic bond to a 3',4'-epoxybutyl group. It is classified as an experimental small molecule and has not been approved for clinical use. The compound has been studied primarily as a chemical probe and inhibitor of beta-amylase enzymes. Structural studies have shown that it can act as both a reversible and irreversible inhibitor of barley beta-amylase by covalently modifying the enzyme's catalytic residues[9][1][3]. Its main application has been in biochemical research to dissect starch degradation pathways in plants.
