Overview

3,4-Methylenedioxyethylamphetamine (MDEA), colloquially known as 'Eve,' is a synthetic empathogenic psychoactive drug belonging to the substituted amphetamine and methylenedioxyphenethylamine classes. Structurally related to MDMA, MDEA is characterized by a methylenedioxy group at positions 3 and 4 of the phenyl ring and an ethyl group on the nitrogen atom. It acts as a triple monoamine releasing agent and reuptake inhibitor, increasing the synaptic concentrations of serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine. While MDEA has no established medical uses and is classified as a controlled substance in most jurisdictions, it is utilized in forensic research. For example, the Universitätsklinikum Freiburg has investigated MDEA to characterize how forensically relevant compounds deposit and persist in dental biofilm grown on teeth and oral splints in healthy volunteers.
