3,5-Dinitrocatechol is a potent and selective small molecule inhibitor of catechol O-methyltransferase (COMT), an enzyme involved in the deactivation of catechol neurotransmitters such as dopamine. By inhibiting COMT (IC50 ≈12 nM), it increases levels of these neurotransmitters in the central nervous system. This mechanism has potential therapeutic applications for disorders like Parkinson's disease and possibly schizophrenia and depression. The compound is highly selective for COMT over other enzymes involved in catecholamine metabolism and can cross the blood-brain barrier when administered orally or parenterally[1][4][7].
