3,6-dihydroxy-xanthene-9-propionic acid is a synthetic small molecule belonging to the class of aromatic heteropolycyclic compounds containing a xanthene moiety. It has been studied as an experimental compound and is not approved for clinical use. The compound acts as a noncompetitive inhibitor of human glutathione reductase (hGR), binding at a unique site in the enzyme's dimer interface and causing local structural changes that inhibit enzyme activity. This mechanism does not overlap with the glutathione binding site but prevents substrate binding through allosteric effects. Its potential utility lies in structure-based drug design targeting glutathione reductase[1][5].
