This drug is a combination of the broadly neutralizing anti-HIV monoclonal antibody 3BNC117 and the radioisotope copper-64 (Cu‑64), used as a radiolabeled imaging agent. The antibody, 3BNC117, targets the CD4 binding site on the HIV envelope glycoprotein, neutralizing diverse strains of HIV and facilitating immune clearance of infected cells. When conjugated with a chelator (such as MeCOSar) and labeled with Cu‑64, it enables non-invasive positron emission tomography (PET) imaging to detect and quantify HIV reservoirs in tissues. This approach is being investigated primarily for its diagnostic utility in people living with HIV to localize persistent viral reservoirs during suppressive antiretroviral therapy[1][2][4]. The development leverages both immunotherapy principles (via bNAb targeting) and radiopharmaceutical diagnostics.
