Overview

4-(Acetylamino)-3-hydroxy-5-nitrobenzoic acid is a synthetic benzoic acid derivative primarily investigated as an experimental small molecule inhibitor of influenza virus neuraminidase. By binding to the active site of neuraminidase, it inhibits the enzyme's function and prevents the release of new viral particles from infected cells, thereby disrupting viral replication. The compound has demonstrated moderate inhibitory activity against various influenza strains in biochemical assays and serves as a foundational structure for developing more potent neuraminidase inhibitors. Additionally, derivatives have shown analgesic effects via cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) interaction, anti-inflammatory properties in animal models, and antioxidant activity due to its hydroxyl group[1][4][5]. It is not approved for clinical use but remains under investigation as a research tool.
