Overview

4-(Aminosulfonyl)-N-[(2,5-difluorophenyl)methyl]-benzamide is an experimental small molecule compound containing a benzamide moiety N-linked to a benzyl group with two fluorine substitutions. It is not approved for clinical use and has no known marketed indications. The compound acts as a potent inhibitor of human carbonic anhydrase II (CA II), binding with high affinity (Kd ~2.2 nM). Carbonic anhydrase II is a zinc metalloenzyme involved in the reversible hydration of carbon dioxide and plays roles in pH regulation and fluid secretion in various tissues. Inhibition of CA II can be relevant for conditions such as glaucoma, epilepsy, or altitude sickness; however, this specific compound has not advanced beyond experimental research[1][3]. Structural studies have shown its binding mode to CA II using X-ray crystallography[3].
