Overview

4-(quinolin-3-ylmethyl)piperidine-1-carboxylic acid is an experimental small molecule compound (C16H18N2O2) investigated primarily as a fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH) inhibitor. FAAH is an integral membrane enzyme responsible for the degradation of endogenous lipid signaling molecules, including endocannabinoids such as anandamide and other fatty acid amides. Inhibition of FAAH increases levels of these bioactive lipids, which can modulate pain, inflammation, mood, appetite, and neuroprotection. Preclinical and patent literature suggest potential therapeutic applications in a wide range of conditions mediated by FAAH activity—including anxiety, depression, pain disorders (including neuropathic pain), sleep disorders, eating disorders (such as obesity), inflammation-related diseases (e.g., rheumatoid arthritis), multiple sclerosis and other movement disorders, neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease, epilepsy, Tourette's syndrome, autoimmune uveitis/optic neuritis/neuroinflammation/multiple sclerosis/Huntington's chorea/Niemann-Pick disease/stroke/closed head injury/cerebral vasospasm/glaucoma/irritable bowel syndrome/inflammatory bowel disease/immunosuppression/gastroesophageal reflux/paralytic ileus/secretory diarrhea/gastric ulcer/rheumatoid arthritis/unwanted pregnancy/hypertension/cancer/hepatitis/allergic airway disease/type I diabetes/intractable pruritus/symptoms of drug withdrawal/nausea/emesis/sexual dysfunction/post-traumatic stress disorder[2][3]. The compound has not been approved for any indication to date[6].
