4-methyl-2,5-dimethoxyamphetamine is a synthetic psychedelic drug of the substituted amphetamine and phenethylamine class, commonly known as DOM or STP. It was first synthesized by Alexander Shulgin and is notable for its potent hallucinogenic effects that are similar in nature to LSD. The compound acts primarily as an agonist at serotonin receptor 2A (HTR2A), which mediates its psychoactive properties including alterations in perception, cognition, mood, and behavior[1][3][4][5]. The drug has a long duration of action—typically lasting between 14 to 20 hours—and is usually taken orally[4]. It was distributed illicitly under the name "STP" in the late 1960s but has no approved medical use and is classified as a Schedule I controlled substance in many countries[1][4]. Its metabolism involves cytochrome P450 enzymes such as CYP2D6[3][5].
