Drug intelligence / Profile preview
**5,10,15,20-Tetrakis(4-sulfonatophenyl)porphyrin** is a water-soluble synthetic sulfonated porphyrin photosensitizer, also called TPPS. Kafrelsheikh University registered it as an investigational intervention, described as sulfonatoporphyrin plus sunlight exposure, in the Phase 1 COVID-19 study NCT04371822. The proposed therapeutic rationale was light-driven photodynamic generation of reactive oxygen species to damage viral structures; this was a hypothesis in the study rationale and should not be interpreted as established clinical efficacy against COVID-19. ([deltatrials.com](https://deltatrials.com/trial/NCT04371822))\n\nTPPS is a defined porphyrin chemical substance with CAS number 35218-75-8; it has also been studied as a photosensitizer and as an experimental contrast-media-related compound, but the Kafrelsheikh program was registered as a therapeutic COVID-19 investigation rather than a diagnostic-imaging product.
