Overview

5,7-dihydroxytryptamine is a synthetic tryptamine derivative with hydroxyl groups at positions 5 and 7 of the indole ring. It is a neurotoxic analogue of serotonin and is used in neuropharmacological research. Its mechanism involves selective uptake into serotonergic neurons via the serotonin transporter, where it undergoes auto-oxidation to produce reactive quinonoid intermediates, leading to the destruction of serotonergic neurons. It also depletes norepinephrine, though less selectively unless co-administered with a norepinephrine transporter inhibitor (e.g., desmethylimipramine). The compound is used predominantly as an experimental tool for studying the function of serotonin in the central nervous system and assessing the effects of serotonin depletion[1][2][3][5][7].
