Overview

5'-S-ethyl-5'-thioadenosine is a synthetic thionucleoside analog of adenosine in which the hydroxy group at the 5' position of ribose is replaced by an ethylsulfanyl (ethylthio) group. It belongs to the class of organic compounds known as 5'-deoxy-5'-thionucleosides. This compound has been reported as a metabolite and studied in protozoan parasites such as Trypanosoma brucei. Its biological activity is related to its structural similarity to adenosine and methylthioadenosine; however, specific pharmacological mechanisms or clinical uses have not been established. It is considered an experimental small molecule with no approved indications[1][6].
