Overview

A synthetic small molecule analog of riboflavin pathway intermediates. It is a phosphonate derivative designed to mimic the natural substrate of lumazine synthase and acts as an inhibitor of this enzyme. Lumazine synthase is the penultimate enzyme in the biosynthesis of riboflavin (vitamin B₂). By inhibiting lumazine synthase activity in microorganisms (such as bacteria), this compound can potentially disrupt riboflavin biosynthesis and thus has been studied as an antibacterial agent or biochemical tool for probing flavin metabolism[4]. The compound was rationally designed using molecular modeling to fit into the active site of lumazine synthase and shows relatively potent inhibitory activity compared to other known inhibitors.
