5-[(phenylsulfonyl)amino]-1,3,4-thiadiazole-2-sulfonamide is an experimental small molecule compound belonging to the benzenesulfonamide class. It acts as a potent inhibitor of carbonic anhydrase 2 (CA II), with a reported Ki of approximately 9 nM. Carbonic anhydrase inhibitors are known for their diuretic and antiglaucoma effects and have been explored for other indications such as epilepsy and altitude sickness. This compound has not been approved for clinical use in any country and has no reported clinical trial activity beyond preclinical or early research phases[1][2]. Its primary mechanism is inhibition of the enzyme carbonic anhydrase 2.
