Overview

The combination "5-ALA + porfimer sodium" refers to two separate photosensitizing agents used in photodynamic therapy (PDT). These are not typically administered together as a single combination drug, but rather are two distinct agents used for similar therapeutic purposes. Both drugs work by accumulating in target tissues and becoming activated when exposed to specific wavelengths of light, causing cell death in the targeted area. They are used primarily for the treatment of various cancers including esophageal, lung, and brain tumors, visualization of malignant tissue during surgery (particularly 5-ALA for gliomas), and treatment of actinic keratosis and other skin conditions (primarily 5-ALA). 5-ALA (aminolevulinic acid) is a porphyrin precursor metabolized to protoporphyrin IX, while porfimer sodium (Photofrin) is a direct photosensitizing agent. Both are applied in photodynamic therapy, which involves administration of the photosensitizing agent followed by exposure to light of a specific wavelength to activate the drug and cause localized tissue destruction.
