Overview

5-Fluoro-N,N-dimethyltryptamine (5-F-DMT) is a synthetic psychedelic compound of the tryptamine family, structurally related to dimethyltryptamine (DMT) and 5-MeO-DMT. It acts as a potent agonist at several serotonin (5-HT) receptors, with its primary biological targets being the 5-HT1A and 5-HT2A receptors. In preclinical research, 5-F-DMT has been shown to induce a robust head-twitch response (HTR) in mice, which is a behavioral proxy for hallucinogenic activity in humans. It also exhibits affinity for the 5-HT2B and 5-HT2C receptors and acts as an inhibitor of the serotonin transporter (SERT). While it has been investigated for its ability to promote neuroplasticity through the upregulation of immediate early genes such as *Arc* and *Egr-2*, it is currently utilized as a research compound to explore structure-activity relationships and the therapeutic potential of halogenated tryptamines rather than being a commercially developed pharmaceutical.
