Overview

This is a combination chemotherapy regimen consisting of four cytotoxic agents: - 5-fluorouracil (an antimetabolite that inhibits DNA synthesis by blocking thymidylate synthase) - cyclophosphamide (an alkylating agent that crosslinks DNA, inhibiting cell division) - doxorubicin (an anthracycline antibiotic that intercalates into DNA and inhibits topoisomerase II, preventing DNA replication and repair) - vinblastine (a vinca alkaloid that disrupts microtubule formation, inhibiting mitosis) Each drug attacks cancer cells through a different mechanism. This combination is not among the most commonly used standard regimens for breast cancer or other cancers but contains drugs frequently used in various established regimens. The closest standard regimens are FAC/CAF (fluorouracil, doxorubicin/adriamycin, cyclophosphamide) and MVAC/VABCD for other cancers[1][2][5][6]. Vinblastine is more commonly combined with other agents in Hodgkin lymphoma or testicular cancer protocols.
