Overview
This is a combination chemotherapy regimen consisting of five drugs: 5-fluorouracil (an antimetabolite that inhibits thymidylate synthase and disrupts DNA synthesis), cyclophosphamide (an alkylating agent that crosslinks DNA), methotrexate (a folate antagonist inhibiting dihydrofolate reductase and thus DNA synthesis), prednisolone/prednisone (a synthetic glucocorticoid with anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive effects), and vincristine (a vinca alkaloid that inhibits microtubule formation in mitosis). This regimen has been used as adjuvant therapy for various solid tumors including breast cancer, lung cancer, ovarian cancer, and gastrointestinal cancers. The combination attacks cancer cells through multiple mechanisms to maximize cytotoxicity while reducing the likelihood of resistance. It is typically administered in cycles over several months[1][2][3].
