Drug intelligence / Profile preview
This is a combination regimen of three agents used as adjuvant chemoimmunotherapy primarily in the treatment of certain cancers such as gastric cancer and has also been studied in breast cancer. The components are: - **5-fluorouracil (5-FU):** A pyrimidine analog antimetabolite that inhibits thymidylate synthase, disrupting DNA synthesis and function. - **Mitomycin C:** An antitumor antibiotic that acts as an alkylating agent after activation in vivo, cross-linking DNA and inhibiting its synthesis. - **PSK (polysaccharide-K or protein-bound polysaccharide K):** An immunomodulatory agent derived from the mushroom Coriolus versicolor; it enhances immune responses against tumor cells. The combination leverages cytotoxic effects on tumor cells (from 5-FU and mitomycin C) with immunostimulatory activity from PSK. This regimen has demonstrated efficacy comparable to other chemotherapy regimens for gastric cancer post-surgery[2], with some evidence suggesting improved outcomes when added to standard chemotherapy[1][2]. Side effects are generally mild and tolerable[1].
