Overview

5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) is a naturally occurring amino acid and the immediate chemical precursor to the neurotransmitter serotonin. In the context of spinal cord injury (SCI) research led by Jessica M. D'Amico, 5-HTP is being investigated for its potential to restore serotonergic modulation of spinal neurons, which is often lost or diminished following injury. It is typically co-administered with carbidopa, a peripheral aromatic L-amino acid decarboxylase inhibitor, to prevent the conversion of 5-HTP to serotonin in peripheral tissues. This maximizes its transport across the blood-brain barrier and increases serotonin availability within the central nervous system. This therapeutic approach aims to reduce spasticity and enhance motor function by increasing the excitability of motor pathways in individuals with chronic incomplete or complete SCI.
