Overview

6,6-[2H]glucose (also known as [6,6-2H2]glucose or dideuterated glucose) is a stable, non-radioactive isotope-labeled form of D-glucose. It is widely utilized in clinical research and metabolic studies as a tracer to quantify glucose kinetics, including endogenous glucose production (EGP), rate of appearance (Ra), and rate of disappearance (Rd). By infusing a known amount of the tracer and measuring its dilution in the plasma using mass spectrometry, researchers can calculate the flux of glucose through various metabolic pathways. This tool is essential for investigating the pathophysiology of metabolic disorders such as type 2 diabetes and obesity, as well as the effects of exercise and pharmacological interventions on carbohydrate metabolism. Unlike radioactive tracers, stable isotopes like 6,6-[2H]glucose do not pose radiation risks, making them suitable for use in a wide range of human populations, including children and pregnant women.
