6-[(1-naphthylmethyl)sulfanyl]-9H-purine (NMMP) is a small molecule derivative of 6-mercaptopurine (6-MP) that has demonstrated anti-tumor activities. It inhibits the proliferation of various human cancer cell lines, including hepatocellular carcinoma (HepG2) cells, by inducing G2/M phase cell cycle arrest and mitochondria-dependent apoptosis. Its mechanism involves reducing levels of cyclin-dependent kinase 4 (CDK4) and cyclins B1/D1, and increasing the expression of cleaved caspase-9 and caspase-3, as well as the Bax/Bcl-2 protein ratio. These actions suggest its potential therapeutic value for cancer treatment.
