Overview

**6-formylindolo[3,2-b]carbazole (FICZ)** is a high-affinity endogenous ligand of the **aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR)**. It is a *tryptophan-derived indole compound* and acts as a potent AHR agonist, influencing numerous biological processes including immune regulation (particularly Th17 and Treg cell differentiation), stem and progenitor cell expansion, and cytokine production (notably IL-17 and IL-22). FICZ is generated both by UV/visible light-induced photooxidation of tryptophan and enzymatically, is present in human skin and in some skin diseases, and is produced by certain skin commensal microorganisms. Its AHR agonism plays a role in intestinal barrier protection, skin immunity, and potentially in inflammatory and autoimmune diseases[1][2][3][4].
