68Ga-A3 is a radiopharmaceutical PET tracer developed by Peking Union Medical College Hospital to target and image Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme 2 (ACE2) expression in vivo. The tracer was designed by identifying and utilizing key ACE2-binding sequences derived from the receptor-binding domain (RBD) of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein. By labeling these binding motifs with the positron-emitting isotope Gallium-68, researchers can non-invasively map ACE2 distribution using PET/CT imaging. While initially motivated by the need to understand ACE2's role as a host cell entry point for SARS-CoV-2, the tracer is being clinically evaluated for its diagnostic potential in lung cancer, where ACE2 expression may serve as a biomarker for tumor characterization and localization.
