Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Abacavir + lamivudine is a fixed-dose combination antiretroviral medication used for the treatment of HIV/AIDS. It contains two nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs): abacavir and lamivudine. Both drugs work by inhibiting the action of HIV reverse transcriptase, an enzyme necessary for viral replication, thereby preventing the virus from multiplying in the body. This combination is generally recommended to be used with other antiretrovirals as part of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART). Abacavir + lamivudine is approved for use in adults and children weighing at least 25 kg and is taken orally as a tablet. The drug was first approved in 2004 and is included on the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines[1][2][4][5].
