Drug intelligence / Profile preview
**Abacavir + nelfinavir** is a combination of two antiretroviral agents used in the treatment of HIV-1 infection. Abacavir is a nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI) that works by inhibiting the HIV reverse transcriptase enzyme and thereby blocks viral DNA synthesis. Nelfinavir is a protease inhibitor (PI) that inhibits the HIV-1 protease enzyme, preventing viral polyprotein cleavage and the production of mature infectious virus particles. This combination is part of an antiretroviral therapy regimen but is not available as a fixed-dose combination; instead, the individual agents are co-administered. It is used primarily in combination with other HIV drugs as part of a multidrug regimen for HIV/AIDS.
