Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Abacavir + tenofovir is a combination of two nucleoside/nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitors used in HIV treatment. However, this specific combination is generally avoided in clinical practice due to high rates of treatment failure. Studies have reported excessive and rapid early treatment failure in regimens containing both abacavir and tenofovir. The combination can lead to the development of the K65R mutation in HIV-1 reverse transcriptase, which reduces phenotypic susceptibility to the drug combination.
