Overview

This is a combination therapy consisting of abidol hydrochloride (also known as umifenovir or arbidol) and an interferon (typically recombinant human interferon alpha-2b). Abidol hydrochloride is a broad-spectrum antiviral agent primarily used in Russia and China for the treatment and prevention of influenza. It acts by inhibiting membrane fusion between the viral envelope and host cell membranes, thereby blocking viral entry into cells. Additionally, it has immunomodulatory effects including stimulation of humoral immune responses, induction of endogenous interferons, and enhancement of macrophage phagocytic activity[1]. Interferons are cytokines with potent antiviral properties; they enhance the innate immune response against viruses by inducing antiviral proteins in host cells. The combination has been investigated for synergistic effects in treating viral infections such as COVID-19. Clinical studies suggest that combining IFN-alpha2b with arbidol may reduce the duration of detectable virus in respiratory samples and decrease inflammatory markers like IL-6 and CRP compared to monotherapy[2][4].
