Abiraterone acetate + degarelix is a combination therapy used primarily in the treatment of prostate cancer. Abiraterone acetate is a prodrug of abiraterone, which acts as a selective inhibitor of Cytochrome P450 17A1 (CYP17A1), an enzyme critical for androgen biosynthesis. By inhibiting CYP17A1, it reduces the production of testosterone and other androgens that can stimulate prostate cancer growth. Degarelix is a Gonadotropin-releasing hormone receptor (GnRH receptor) antagonist that blocks GnRH receptors in the pituitary gland, leading to rapid suppression of luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), resulting in decreased testosterone production by the testes. The combination aims to achieve more profound androgen deprivation than either agent alone, potentially improving outcomes for patients with advanced or high-risk localized prostate cancer[2][3][5][6][8].
