Overview

ABP-671 + febuxostat is a combination therapy being developed by Atom Therapeutics for the treatment of hyperuricemia, particularly in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). ABP-671 is a potent and selective small molecule inhibitor of the urate transporter 1 (URAT1), which is responsible for the reabsorption of uric acid in the renal proximal tubules. Febuxostat is a non-purine selective inhibitor of xanthine oxidase (XO), the enzyme that catalyzes the production of uric acid from hypoxanthine and xanthine. By combining a uricosuric agent (ABP-671) that increases renal uric acid excretion with a xanthine oxidase inhibitor (febuxostat) that decreases systemic uric acid production, the therapy aims to achieve a synergistic reduction in serum uric acid levels. This dual-action approach is intended to provide superior efficacy and a potentially improved safety profile for patients who are refractory to monotherapy or have impaired renal function.
