Overview
ACAM FLU-A + adjuvant 1 is a **combination immunization product** designed as a universal influenza A vaccine. The core vaccine, ACAM FLU-A, is a recombinant protein vaccine in which the conserved extracellular domain M2e from the influenza A M2 ion channel protein is fused to a hepatitis B virus core protein to enhance immunogenicity. The adjuvant "adjuvant 1" refers to either aluminum hydroxide or QS-21 Stimulon, both tested for improved immune response. In clinical studies, the vaccine-adjuvant combination was shown to generate strong immune responses with 90% seroconversion in the group using QS-21 Stimulon. The vaccine aims to induce M2e antibodies, offering broad protection against all influenza A strains and potentially acting as a universal pandemic and seasonal flu vaccine. Developed by Acambis, it is intended to overcome the need for annual vaccine reformulation and could be stockpiled for future use. In preclinical (ferret) studies, ACAM FLU-A provided substantial protection against lethal H5N1 challenge[1][2][4].
